Erica’s Story: Feeling Beautiful Again After a Difficult Time
For Erica, this portrait session was not just about having beautiful photographs taken.
It marked something much more personal.
She had come through a difficult period in her life and wanted to do something that felt like a statement — not for anyone else, but for herself.
A way of saying: I am still here.
I have come through something.
I am ready to see myself again.
“This photo shoot seemed like a great way to celebrate how I feel on the inside,” Erica said. “And how important it is for the inside to be what matters.”
For many women, a portrait session becomes meaningful because it captures more than appearance. It can become a way to acknowledge a transition, a milestone, a recovery, a change in identity, or a new season of life.
Her Venus Rising session was about celebrating the person she still felt herself to be — even after a time that had made that harder to access.
“It just seemed like a great way to celebrate coming through a really, really difficult time for me,” she said.

There is a particular kind of courage in choosing to be photographed when you have not been feeling good about yourself.
Many people wait until they feel ready. Until they feel more confident. Until they lose weight. Until life feels easier. Until they feel more like themselves again.
But sometimes the portrait comes first.
Sometimes seeing yourself differently is part of the return.
The finished portraits were more powerful than she expected.
“Seeing the results shocked me,” she said, “because it’s a long time since I felt good about myself and about the way I look.”
That moment matters.
Because when someone has been through a hard season, it can affect how they see themselves. The outside may not feel connected to the inside. The person in the mirror may not match the person they remember being, or the person they are trying to return to.
The portraits gave Erica a different reflection.
“These photographs — I feel beautiful,” she said. “And that’s a hard thing to say and to admit, but I do. I look at these photos and I feel beautiful.”

That is the heart of Erica’s story.
Not vanity.
Not performance.
Not pretending everything has been easy.
A portrait can become a way of seeing yourself with more kindness, more recognition, and more honesty than you may have been able to access for a while.
The portraits captured both who she is and who she wanted to come back to.
“It captures who I am,” she said. “And the person that I want to get back to.”
Her session was playful, bold, theatrical and joyful. The images had energy and personality. They were not quiet portraits of someone hiding. They were portraits of someone choosing to be seen again.
That is why portrait photography can sometimes reach deeper than people expect.
You arrive thinking you are having photographs taken.
You leave with evidence of a part of yourself you may have forgotten, softened, protected or put aside.
For Erica, the message to other women was simple.
“I cannot say enough to all the women out there to go for it and have fun with it,” she said. “Celebrate the amazing humans that you are.”
